Nicole Dan is from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and graduated from the University of Florida in 2018 with degrees in political science and journalism. Prior to attending McCourt, she worked for a digital fundraising firm for progressive candidates and causes. She hopes to use policy analysis to integrate strategy and tech, while leveraging her skills in data, analytics and policy.

MPP’21 – Inequality, labor economics, education policy
Before Georgetown, Nima was a research assistant at the Labor & Worklife Program at Harvard Law School. Nima is currently a research assistant at The Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality and is also the VP of Community Development & Outreach for EduWonks. He received his B.A. in Political Science from Boston University.

Alexandra Oderman, Senior Communications Editor
MBA/MPP ’22 – Immigration Policy, Gender Policy & Corporate Social Responsibility
Originally from the Boston area, Alexandra received her B.A. in Literatures in English and Government (double major) from Connecticut College in 2013. She previously worked as a Corporate Immigration Paralegal for Fragomen Worldwide. Interested in immigration policy, women’s issues and civil rights, Alexandra hopes to transition to a career where she can facilitate sustainable business decisions regarding the movement of global talent and CSR activities.
Haoyang Li, Communications and Data Visualization Editor
MPP ’22 – Social Policy, Foreign Policy
Haoyang Li graduated from Wuhan University in China with a bachelor of arts degree in Chinese language and literature. Before coming to McCourt School, he completed a one-year internship of media and government relations at Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy. During that time, he mainly operated the center’s social media platform to promote the publications of scholars at the Center on topics such as Sino-US relations by means of visualization design, video clip and podcast recording. In his spare time, he loves photography and music production, and hopes to build a bridge between interest and academic. He once tried to expose China’s floating population issues through holding independent photography exhibitions.

MIDP ’22 – Migration, urban development, labor economics, and social welfare policy
Alya hails from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and graduated from American University in 2016 with degrees in international studies and business administration. Before McCourt, she worked as a partnership development associate at education nonprofit Teach For Malaysia and as a due diligence analyst at Kroll Associates. Alya is passion about implementing sustainable policies around social welfare, migration, and urban development and hopes that her time at McCourt will give her the necessary skills to be a strong policymaker.

Erden Sang is the senior business manager of GPPR. He is responsible for budgeting and event planning. Before Georgetown, Erden worked in the financial industry. Margaret Jones is the business manager of GPPR. She is responsible for assisting with the budgeting and planning. Before Georgetown, Margaret worked in the technology industry with Yahoo! and CBS Sports Digital. She holds an MBA from the University of Miami and a BS in Finance from the University of Maryland. MPP’21 – Global health policy
Roxanne graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a BA in Economics. After graduation, she worked on the Global Health Policy team at the Center for Global Development and at the World Bank as a Short-Term Consultant. Her research has focused on innovative financing mechanisms, health systems in Latin America, and donor funding for family planning. She hopes to use the skills she learns at McCourt to study social protection programs in Latin America and service delivery during humanitarian emergencies.
MSDSPP ’22 – Partisanship, Voting, Elections
Alex is originally from Melbourne, Florida, and graduated from Florida State University in 2020 with a BS in Political Science and a BA in Spanish. His policy and research interests include partisanship, voting, and elections, and his research so far has focused on factors influencing voter attitudes and partisan preferences. When he’s not working for GPPR, Alex enjoys learning French, listening to podcasts, and trying out new recipes.
MSDSPP ’21 – Social Policy, Criminal Justice Reform
Emma joined the Data Science Public Policy program after three years in Boston working as an analyst in the insurance industry. In this role, she developed an appreciation data as a powerful mechanism for understanding the world, and came to McCourt with the goal of using data to inform policy research. She holds an BA in Business and Economics from Brandeis University, where she also studied Social Policy and Legal Studies. In her free time, she loves to listen to music, read, and embroider.

MSDSPP ’21 – Urban policy, regional inequality, economic development
Prior to coming to the Data Science for Public Policy program at McCourt, Eric worked for two years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, assisting economists with both their own academic research and data analysis related to monetary policy. This job developed his interest in the intersection of data science and public policy, especially regarding urban policy, regional inequality, and economic development. After graduating from McCourt, Eric hopes to work for a think tank or local government agency doing work related to data science and urban policy.

MPP ’21 – Equity, education policy, housing policy
Gabrielle came to Georgetown after four years in Boston, where she worked in the Consumer Protection Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. There she assisted attorneys in remedying the abusive practices of for-profit colleges, mortgage servicers, debt collectors, student loan servicers, and more. Gabrielle received her BA in Political Science from Bryn Mawr College. She is interested in policies that improve equity in education, housing, and family wealth.

Originally from Germany, Hannah moved to Boston when she was young. After growing up in New England, she attended American University in Washington, DC, where she majored in International Relations and minored in Economics, French and Spanish. She also earned two translation certificates in French and Spanish. Upon graduating from American University, Hannah moved to London, where she worked for a financial technology start-up. After two years, she transferred to New York, where she took over operations for her employer’s North American clients. At McCourt, Hannah is focusing primarily on technology policy. She is interested in studying economic shifts due to technological advancement and sees herself going into think thank work after McCourt. In her spare time, Hannah likes to read, spend time outdoors and explore different corners of DC.

MPP ’21 – Racial equity, Intersectional social policy, Political theory
Kalamazoo-born and Kansas City-raised, Daniel hopes to bring some of the Midwestern ethos out to the East Coast. Daniel graduated with degrees in French and Global & International Studies from the University of Kansas in 2019. As a Kenyan-American and an aspiring polyglot, loves and values diverse disciplinary and cultural/linguistic perspectives and how those interweave with policy needs and outcomes. In the rare moment away from Old North, Daniel is likely drawing, taking a long walk across town, or wonking out about politics, sports, or board games.

Originally from China, Yue received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Jilin University. After graduation she worked at National Radio Center in Beijing for 2 years as an editor to write social news for Voice of China. During that time her coverage was on livelihood issues and poverty reduction. Now she’s interested in social policy and foreign policy. In her free time, she loves watching and analyzing figure skating programs.

Nisha is currently an MPP evening student and during the day she works on reproductive health and rights advocacy at The White Ribbon Alliance. After earning her BA from Macalester College in 2010, Nisha cut her teeth in civil society and development work as a community organizer in Florida before shifting to international development project management, primarily in Africa and South Asia. Her personal interests include teaching dance classes and being overly zealous about her book club.

Rachel brings a blend of experience in investigative journalism and land use/development policy to the GPPR team. Her policy interests are focused on the intersection of market based incentives and public policy, particularly as it relates to housing and urban development. An Oakland CA native, Rachel graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2018 and has spent the last few years working at an LA based public policy and communications firm focused on regional issues.

MPP ’21 – Democracy, institutions, electoral politics
Steven Meyer is from Buffalo, NY and graduated with a BA in Political Science from American University in 2013. A two-time Democratic Party nominee for State House in New York, Steve has spent much of the past decade working in State politics and government, including serving as a Legislative Director in the New York State Assembly and a former Democratic Party Executive Director. He has also worked as a CBA contract negotiator for one of the largest public employee labor unions in the country, CSEA-AFSCME. His goal is to increase citizen participation in government, and is currently studying ways to modernize elections in the United States.

William Fotter is from Albuquerque, New Mexico and graduated with a degree in international relations from the University of Arizona in 2019. While in Arizona, he worked for his local congressman, a county political party, and the Arizona State Senate. Working as a policy analyst for the Arizona State Senate solidified his desire to work in public policy as a career, and he hopes to work in government as a public servant or in a think tank conducting research. In his free time, he loves to go hiking and travel to national parks.

William “Ryan” Brown, a native of San Antonio, Texas, serves as an active-duty Captain in the United States Army. Ryan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies from Texas Lutheran University and a Master’s of Public Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Ryan‘s research interests include policy issues related to public leadership practices, social justice, higher education and equal employment opportunity. In his free time, Ryan loves to travel internationally, hang out with family, friends and conduct outdoor activities such as Spartan Races, 5k/10k Runs and Half-Marathons.

As a native Washingtonian, Dia Porter’s policy interests are urban-centric. Her current research focuses are in the realms of affordable housing, big data regulation, and transformative justice. She holds a B.A. in Communications and Business from George Mason University, receiving honors from Oxford University for her research in Gender Studies and Organizational Communications.

Haley is a second-year MPP student at McCourt, originally from New Orleans, LA. She graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in Political Science. While in Louisiana, Haley worked for the Public Defender’s Office, research think tanks, and the Governor’s Office, and she currently works as a research assistant with the Justice Tech Lab. Her research interests are criminal justice reform and welfare policy and she plans to pursue a career working as a policy advocate.

Lauren Kestner is a second-year MPP student at McCourt. She graduated from the University of Maryland in 2014 with a degree in finance and spent the last five years working in the banking and corporate finance industries. In the future, Lauren hopes to leverage the research skills that she’s developed at McCourt to pursue a career in domestic health policy or international development policy.

Originally from Woodbine, Maryland, Victoria graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2019 with a dual degree in Government and Politics (BA) and Psychology (BS) with a minor in Neuroscience. Victoria has worked in several Neuroscience research labs and wants to translate her research skills into a career in policy research and analysis. Her research interests include Social, Environmental, and Mental Health Policy. She is also interested in how cognitive and neural processes factor into policymaking.

MS-DSPP ‘22 – Energy and Environmental Policy, Tech Policy
Gloria Li graduated from the University of Florida in 2019 with degrees in Environmental Science and Philosophy, and a minor in Agricultural and Natural Resource Law. Before coming to McCourt, she worked for a year as a policy associate at the trade association Advanced Energy Economy to expand renewable energy markets. Gloria is passionate about using her data toolset to inform evidence-based policymaking and accelerate cross-sector decarbonization, but also about things like writing, painting, and musical theatre.
