GPPReview Online Submission Guidelines

Eligibility. GPPReview’s mission is to provide an outlet for innovative new thinkers and established policymakers to offer perspectives on the politics and policies that shape our nation and our world. While our editorial staff is entirely composed of GPPI students, we welcome contributions from a variety of students, academics, practitioners, analysts and others. If you have an idea you would like to write about, please fill out the form below, including a brief (nor more than 5 sentences) outline of your blog entry. You can also contact the Executive Online Editor with a brief introduction about your background, a description of your contribution, as well as a likely timeline for your submission.

Process Overview. GPPReview Online strives to publish articles within one week of submission of the blog entry. Upon submission, your article will be reviewed by GPPReview Online staff and returned to you for final edits before publication.

Relevance. GPPReview Online features articles about a variety of policy topics, both about national and international policy issues. The idea is to provide well-written, well researched analysis or points of view about a policy relevant topic. While GPPReview Online aims at featuring articles about a broad range of topics, there are a few things GPPReview Online articles are NOT:

  • GPPReview Online is not a forum to describe personal experiences. While it is certainly ok and welcomed to state the link between the author and the issue (“I have visited Egypt multiple times both before and after the Arab spring and the contrast is striking.”), it should not be about the author (“Top five cultural misunderstandings during my study abroad in Egypt.”).
  • While we welcome contributions about local issues, they should be of some relevance to a broader policy audience. If the relevance might not be immediately clear, authors are encouraged to put the issue into (a national, global) perspective.
  • GPPReview Online in a non partisan, independent forum. Contributions reflecting views of authors are welcomed and encouraged. When expressing a political opinion about a topic, authors should signal the difference between personal opinion and analysis.

Length.  Submissions for GPPReview Online should range between 750 and 1,250 words. If there is a specific reason why an entry needs to be shorter / longer, this shall be indicated with the submission and discussed with an editor.

Review. All submissions are subject to a review process by GPPReview Online staff. The ultimate decision to publish a submission is with the Executive Online Editor and Senior Online Editors. After your submission has been reviewed by an editor, you will have the opportunity to edit your article through several rounds of editing.

Format and Style. Contributions should reflect the style of writing of the author. However, we demand that submissions follow a few format and style criteria:

  • Hyperlinks are the preferred way for citations and references. Any references will be linked directly from the text to the source, by directly linking the relevant word or sentence.
  • No footnotes or endnotes. If the submission is about a specific article or book, it is OK to reference the book at the end of the submission.
  • If the submission contains facts or numbers, please make it obvious to the reader from where they come.
  • If the submission includes graphs or pictures, please insert a caption.
  • Ideally, submissions will be written in paragraphs and not in a single block.
  • Using unnumbered, well placed subheadings is encouraged.
  • The first paragraph, which will be featured on the main page of the blog, should contain an introduction to the article, as well as an indication of the main message of the submission to encourage reading of the full entry.
  • We encourage submission of a picture that can be posted with the article.

Category. When submitting your proposal, you can choose up to three categories under which your submission will be featured. However, we encourage limiting the category to only those where the link with the text is obvious. The ultimate decision about the category(ies) is with the GPPReview Online executive team.

Tags. You can list as many tags as you think will help the reader navigate to your entry. However, please make sure you look at existing tags on GPPReview Online and try to use the same name for a similar concept. (If there is a tag for “Republican Party” there is no need for a tag for “GOP”).

Questions. Should you have any questions, please contact the Executive Online Editor.

Thank you for your contribution to GPPReview Online!
